Lafayette, California takes its name from American Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. The spelling changed from “LaFayette” to “La Fayette” to “Lafayette” over the years, and it wasn’t until the 1930’s that it officially took its present form.

As with most of the cities in this area, it gained prominence at around the time of California statehood.Over time, Lafayette – once an agricultural center and mill town – became an upscale residential suburb of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Area. Today, Lafayette is known for its nationally ranked schools, rolling hills, and natural attractions such as the Lafayette Reservoir and Briones Regional Park.
